et le Pape reste au Vatican ?!

and the Pope stays in the Vatican?!

Re !

Hey again!

Back in November 2022, MDMA 0006 opened in exactly the same way! And then it vanished all over again, because Éclectique’s habit of appearing and disappearing has only gotten worse since I stepped into adult life, landed a real job and left behind the 10 - 15 hours a week at the Aix-Marseille School of Journalism.

Im bak on Éclectique. Im quiting Éclectique for real. Not quiting Éclectique. With the future of MDMA as shaky as ever, let’s enjoy the moment. Welcome to the seventh edition of Missive du Monde Actuel!!

🇻🇦 AND THE POPE STAYS IN THE VATICAN?!!

What on earth is this insane video????

In 2022, on the France Culture show “Les Chemins de la Philosophie”, in a series called “Joyeux Anniversaire Molière”, Francis Huster launches into a rant about the news from Ukraine as if he were Alceste, the lead in The Misanthrope (1666). Taken out of context, the clip was picked up by CNews on Pascal Praud’s show L'heure des Pros, with the on-screen banner “Ukraine: Francis Huster blows his top”.

For the past few days, the video has been enjoying a second life on X, where it’s instantly getting the parody treatment. Huster has lent his voice to the Minecraft villagers and Cartman in South Park, shown up in the “Premiers pas au Royaume des Fleurs” level, in Adibou, in English in GTA IV, and even replaced Abbé Pierre (not such a bad idea) on Nekfeu’s “Nique les clones, Pt. II”.

John Fitzgerald Kennedy would never have let this happen.

🧱 Columbus, Indiana

Let’s talk architecture. I recently had the pleasure of reuniting with the Miller House, already featured in the second archibeau in Éclectique history, thanks to the American film Columbus (2017), directed by Kogonada. Set in the city of the same name, the film explores how architecture can stir deep emotions in us, through the relationships we build with buildings, the philosophy they give off and the moments we tie to them.

Forty-five minutes from Indianapolis, Columbus stands in the American Midwest as the emblem of a city built around architecture. Ranked sixth in the United States for architectural innovation and design by the American Institute of Architects, this city of 47,000 people was shaped by architects such as Eliel Saarinen, his son Eero Saarinen, Kevin Roche, I.M. Pei (yep, the Louvre pyramid guy), Harry Weese and Deborah Berke.

And so Columbus became an open-air festival of visionary minds who revolutionized the look of civic buildings (banks, churches, county offices, city hall, schools), shaping along 5th Street what is now known as the Avenue of Architects.

💌 Hymne à l’amour

Since Thursday, L’Hymne à l'amour as sung by Céline Dion at the Olympic Games opening ceremony has been available on streaming platforms. This summer, thanks to my friend Julien, I discovered the story and the fate of this beautiful song.

Written by Edith Piaf for her lover Marcel Cerdan, whom she met in 1948 at a concert in New York, the song was composed by her friend Marguerite Monnot, who herself drew on Robert Schumann’s Lied Frühlingsnacht. On September 14, 1949, Piaf performed L’Hymne à l’amour for the first time, in front of a New York crowd at the Versailles cabaret. A month and a half later, Piaf asked Cerdan to join her in New York, where she was singing again on October 28.

Before they could be reunited, Cerdan lost his life at 33 aboard the Lockheed Constellation of Air France Flight 009, on his way to see the love of his life. That very evening, Edith Piaf sang L’Hymne à l’amour, with the words: “If one day life tears you away from me / If you die, if you are far from me / It matters little if you love me / For I would die too (…) / God reunites those who love each other.” The song was recorded the following year with Robert Chauvigny’s orchestra.

Also. While writing the title of this letter, I found myself wondering, when you pair an exclamation mark with a question mark, which one goes first. Apparently, the question mark goes first.

But did you know about the INTERROBANG‽‽‽‽ According to what I could dig up on the subject (Wikipedia), the interrobang (‽) is used “to punctuate a sentence that is both interrogative and exclamatory, with neither taking precedence”. Apparently, the punctuation mark was invented in 1962 by American Martin K. Specter, head of an advertising agency.

Later on, it came to be known as the interrobang, a name blending the Latin interrogatio with the English slang bang, printers’ jargon for the exclamation mark. Even though it was added to the “Americana” typeface in 1966, the interrobang never became a standard punctuation mark.

Finally, let’s part ways with a dancing tribute to Rafael Nadal, and this artwork titled Jostedalsbreen, painted by Peder Balke around 1840, whose full description I translated on Instagram.

See you very soon 🫂

Missive du Monde Actuel!!

Dieu réunit ceux qui s’aiment.”
