MDMA. est de retour !!!

MDMA. is back!!!

MDMA.

Re !

Hi again!

A year ago, in Aix-en-Provence, I wrote the very first missive du monde actuel for Éclectique as part of a student project. During my oral presentation, I promised my teachers M. Hert and M. Matéo that I’d keep MDMA going after my studies. However, in the fourth edition of this missive, I claimed the newsletter was “a huge national success” and “would carry on after the grading” of the project. Sorry for lying to you until now about that second claim.

Since then, a time-guzzling new job, a thesis to write and a few other things have changed while this lovely letter gathered digital dust. And suddenly, the rebirth, the return of links, photos, recommendations… discoveries! For those of you who are new here, this letter talks about couples tearing each other apart and the weirdest McDonald’s in the world, it shares ep-ic guitar solos to brighten up your days or makes you watch ultra-cringe videos of Serge Gainsbourg.

Today, I’m going to make you want to read and go to the movies. Welcome to the sixth edition of Missive du Monde Actuel!

📚 Where would you like to read?

Through a lovely curation page called “whereiwouldliketoread”, my friend Simay Demirel selects and shares a whole bunch of devilishly restful reading spots. Would you like to abandon your mind to the discomfort of the Barcelona chair (tested and disapproved)? To an astonishing indoor cabin topped by an Eames chair? To Solange Knowles’s sofa? On Long Island, in the studio Isamu Noguchi occupied in the ’70s?

Thanks to this page, you’ll fantasize about dreamlike spots where your eyes could land on the most beautiful lines imaginable, the better to escape into the dreams literature makes possible. These worlds may remind you of the wonderful world of the inspiration magazine’s fold-out spreads (clicking each word at the end of this sentence will take you to a different spread).

Knowing where to read is all well and good, but what to read? Well, read:

-

the poems of Frank O’Hara

-

“S’adapter”, by Clara Dupont-Monod (2021)

-

“Clair de femme”, by Romain Gary (1977)

-

“Éloge du risque”, by Anne Dufourmantelle (2011)

-

🫂 Close

After popularizing the adage “If it’s Arte, it’s bound to be good!”, here’s its A24 variant. The film production company A24 is “The Lighthouse,” “Moonlight,” “Uncut Gems,” “Midsommar” and “Close.” In short, it’s always good. Directed by Belgian filmmaker Lukas Dhont, Close is a beautiful film about friendship, self-discovery and the trials of adolescence. A big winner at the Cannes Film Festival this year, this French-Dutch-Belgian feature draws its strength from the power of looks, words, silence and gut-wrenching cinematography.

Go see Close at the movies. It’s a brilliant film, you’re going to cry a lot, and when you walk out of the theater hunting for a tissue to wipe your nose, you’ll tell yourself you’re really glad you saw it.

🧺 A few assorted recommendations:

-

-

look at this picture of Robert De Niro and Joe Pesci on the set of Casino

-

explore this totally brilliant subreddit called “TV Too High,” which gathers every TV in the world that’s literally mounted way too high

-

listen to writer Alice Zeniter talk about the “virile parade of writers,” a clip in which she deconstructs the male genius that justifies the author being disconnected from normal life, often synonymous with social and human excesses that the adoring fan will tend to forgive, sometimes even glorify

-

get acquainted with the “Eclectic” public library in its namesake town in Alabama, where this magazine’s US office will inevitably be set up

-

check out this funny Russian cover of “The History of Sexuality,” written by Michel Foucault between 1976 and 1984

-

watch this great interview with David Bowie from 1999, in which he explains how the internet would change our lives

-

follow Umberto Eco, who passed away in 2016, as he shows you around his gigantic personal library

-

one last little recommendation: these two pretty little bowls found on Etsy

Finally, let’s wrap up this letter’s comeback with a few words of poetry from Guillaume Apollinaire’s “Le Guetteur mélancolique”:

“Never shall the twilights vanquish the dawns

Let us marvel at evenings but live the mornings

Let us scorn the unchanging like stone or gold

Springs that will run dry Let me dip my hands

In the happy wave”

See you very soon!
